CONI have prevented Stefano Mauri from playing for Lazio tonight, but the club confirm he’ll be back against Cagliari.

Mauri is back in training as he recovers from illness, but will have to sit out the Biancocelesti’s trip to Verona tonight as a precaution.

The 34-year-old was admitted to hospital with acute tonsillitis, and was treated with several antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, as is routine for patients suffering from tonsillitis.

The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI)’s anti-doping wing CEFT has apparently prevented the player permission to return to action, out of concern that the drugs in his system, including an increased level of cortisone, could lead to him failing any anti-doping measures.

However, the club have released a brief statement confirming that by Week 10, this weekend, the player will be available again.

“Lazio communicate that footballer Stefano Mauri will return for selection for Lazio-Cagliari, on the occasion of the 10th day of the season,” the club’s statement reads.
