Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero believes that Italian football is making an effort to re-establish itself among the world’s best.

There has been much talk of the decline of Italian football, with Juventus President Andrea Agnelli telling club shareholders that the League has to do more to appeal to a worldwide audience, and to get people back into stadiums.

Del Piero is currently plying his trade in India for Delhi Dynamos, and from the outside the World Cup winner believes the situation is improving.

“Italy is still Italy. There’s no place like home,” the 39-year-old has told RTL.

“In terms of football I can see an ongoing effort to improve the situation, to be able to be more in line with other European and international Leagues which are a step ahead at the moment.

“Italy has its contradictions in certain situations, but with our beauty, culture and everything we have, it is the most beautiful country in the world.”

Del Piero will turn 40 on November 9, and the Bianconeri’s all-time top scorer took time to reflect on his career and his future.

“I started out as child dreaming of being a footballer, and dreaming is what I continue to do in regard to football and many other things.

“Of course, I’m confronted by the reality of my age, my responsibilities and what I’ll do in the future, but I think it’s important for everyone – even at my age – to never stop dreaming.

“What will I do when I stop playing? That’s a question I’ll have to address in the near future.

“I’ve arrived at a particular point in my life, but I will put football first, as I’ve always done in an increasingly calm manner and trying to be as objective as possible.

“I can’t give you an answer today, but we’ll talk in a few years, maybe.”
