Inter technical director Piero Ausilio insists the Nerazzurri are targeting the Champions League, despite a poor start to the season.

Walter Mazzarri’s side lost 2-0 to bottom club Parma at the weekend, leaving the Beneamata ninth in Serie A and the Coach whistled by fans.

Nevertheless, Ausilio believes Inter will come good in the end, and even improve on last season.

“The team can compete to do better than fifth place,” Ausilio told Telelombardia, referencing Inter’s final position last term.

“We can aim for third place, to get into the Champions League and the team has the ability to do so.

“Inter are in a rebuilding phase, and while I’m an optimist by nature I do think there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I see Mazzarri working in the right way everyday, with a lot of energy.

“I think Paratici and Bigon believe in Mazzarri, like I do. At the moment he’s in trouble but he has the experience to get out of this position, and he always hits his targets in the end, such as last year when he took us back into Europe.

“The project started this year, players like Zanetti, Samuel, Milito and Cambiasso aren’t easy to replace.

“We’ll see the benefits in the long-run, because they have been replaced by young talented players who want to emulate them. It’ll certainly take longer to build a team, but the Coach has the opportunity and the time to get the best out of them.

“Another problem was having to start pre-season preparations with 10 players absent due to the World Cup. You can’t look at this in a short-term way.

“We have confidence in our project, and we’ll move forward in the direction we have been travelling in.

“We’re building, when you’re putting your faith in young people they need experience to improve.

“In a few years – or even months – they’ll become different players, foundations on which to build up other players.

“We want to win through financial stability. This doesn’t mean we don’t want to improve the team, just have a little patience.”
