Former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has launched a stinging attack on Italian football after Roma’s two defeats to Bayern.

The Giallorossi were defeated 7-1 at the Olimpico by the German champions, and recorded only 29 per cent of possession in Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat in Bavaria.

Kahn, who spent 14 years with Die Bayern, winning eight Bundesliga titles believes the disparity in the two sides in this season’s Champions League is symptomatic of the gulf between German and Italian football.

“Once German football trembled before Italy, now the opposite is true,” Kahn is quoted as saying by the Corriere dello Sport.

“After the draw many people said Bayern were in a ‘Group of Death’. But were they?

“I would never have imagined Roma would be so bad. They came here [to Munich] with one thing on their mind – not to be beaten by too big a margin.

“What a disappointment. The passage of time has left Italian football behind. It has nothing in common with the modern game, especially in regard to quick football.

“All teams in Italy play in an old-fashioned slow style.

“They don’t have a clue what to do against dynamic teams. That’s why Roma weren’t used to Bayern’s rhythm.”
