Stephan El Shaarawy said he would’ve preferred a Milan victory against Sampdoria to breaking his goal drought.

The Little Pharaoh was on target in tonight’s 2-2 draw, his first Serie A strike since February 2013.

“Let’s say tonight my legs were working well. I am happy to have scored, but I would’ve preferred a victory, as we needed that to get back on track,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We went behind in the second half, so did well to fight back and it’s a deserved draw. Both teams played open football, it was hard-fought and we suffered in some situations, but also created chances at the other end.”

El Shaarawy had failed to find the net in Serie A for 622 days before this evening’s magnificent curler.

“For a striker it is certainly important to score a goal, it was over 20 games since I’d found the net and that will hopefully help my confidence too. It’s just a shame we didn’t get the win.”

Italy Coach Antonio Conte was in the stands at Marassi, so was he happy with El Shaarawy’s goal too?

“I hope so!”
