Juventus played with a back-three system for three years under Conte, winning three consecutive Scudetti.

New Coach Massimiliano Allegri initially stuck with the system, but recently adopted a back four for wins over Olympiacos and Parma.

Speaking to journalists in a Press conference before Italy’s upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier with Croatia, the defender elaborated on the differences between the two formations.

“Organisationally there’s a difference between playing with three defenders and playing with four,” the Italian international explained.

“In a back-three the centre-backs are more aggressive, they have to cover more ground.

“Playing with four you have an extra man, you have to read the game more, be less aggressive.

“However, it’s the same in that the whole team has to approach the game in the same way.

“Allegri was never presumptuous enough to erase what we had done before [at Juventus]. That’s a sign of great intelligence.

“He never said what we had done in the past was wrong, and was careful to put forward his own ideas gradually.

“It was very clever, but that’s not to say we were doing something wrong before, we’re just trying to do what every team has to do and follow the Coach’s instructions.

“The last two games [for Juventus] went well but we can’t make comparisons [between Allegri and Conte]. The important thing is they’re both winners.”

Chiellini also reflected on Conte the Italy CT as opposed to Conte the Juventus Coach, and revealed that the 45-year-old has instilled a ‘club mentality’ in the Azzurri.

“We’re preparing for Sunday’s game [with Croatia] in the way Conte likes.

“Before Italy-Norway we prepared in the same way. That’s one of the strengths of Conte, he prepares for every game in the same way, never taking anything for granted.

“He’s trying to instil a club mentality, to improve relations between the players in the national team and to have more time when we meet up.

“We’ve had all week to prepare for this game, just like a League match.”
