Croatia are playing Argentina tonight in a friendly at Upton Park with a dozen of their squad left behind in Zagreb to train ahead of the more important Euro 2016 qualification clash against Italy.

Luka Modric is one of those, alongside Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic amongst others.

Despite missing the chance to return to London briefly, the Real Madrid midfielder knows that bigger challenges lie ahead.

“I’d like to play against Argentina on Wednesday night,” Modric told media in a Press conference this week.

“But the game against Italy on Sunday night is more important, so I trust in resting before the match at San Siro.

“Obviously, Andrea Pirlo normally plays a crucial role within Italy and there’s no doubt that they will miss him.

“The battle in midfield could help determine the winners.”
