The dramatic last minutes of both games today were decisive, as CSKA Moscow snatched a 1-1 draw to cancel out Francesco Totti’s opener.

A Sergio Aguero hat-trick turned it around for Manchester City to beat 10-man Bayern 3-2 after Mehdi Benatia’s early red card.

Now the Germans have already topped the group, but all three remaining teams can still qualify and are tied on five points each.

Roma will go through as long as they beat Manchester City on December 10, as they have a superior head-to-head record with CSKA thanks to a 5-1 victory at the Olimpico in September.

A draw could also be enough if CSKA Moscow fail to beat Bayern Munich, however it would need to be 0-0.

A 1-1 draw would make Roma and Manchester City completely equal in their head-to-head record, matching the result in England.

At that point, it would go down to overall goal difference and in that case City would be favoured with -1 compared to Roma’s -4.

If they drew 2-2, 3-3 or any other permutation, then City would qualify thanks to more away goals in the head-to-head confrontations.

There are other permutations to consider too, as Roma could finish second and progress in the Champions League, third and drop down to the Europa League or fourth and be out of UEFA competition altogether.

Roma are still in Moscow and will return to Italy tomorrow morning.
