Atalanta supporters will be barred from travelling to away games for three months following clashes with police.

Following the Bergamo club’s defeat to Roma on Saturday night, fans were involved in violent altercations with law enforcement, with bottles and stones being thrown.

As punishment for the actions of Orobici supporters, travelling fans will not be allowed to attend Atalanta’s away games for a period of three months.

The sentence was handed down by Angelino Alfano, Italy’s Minister of Internal Affairs. It’s the first time that new hooliganism laws have been used since their adoption in August.

In theory the club could have had a ban placed on away supporters for up to two years under the measures, but it appears that Alfano believes a three month ban will serve as a sufficient example to fans of other clubs.
