Roma defender Leandro Castan is well enough to leave the intensive care unit, the club has announced.

The Brazilian underwent surgery yesterday to remove a brain malformation, and with the surgery a success and the player interacting as normal, he has been deemed fit enough to leave intensive care.

The Brazilian underwent surgery yesterday to remove a brain malformation, and with the surgery a success and the player interacting as normal, he has been deemed fit enough to leave intensive care.

“Leandro Castan has successfully negotiated the first 24 hours after his operation,” Roma’s official website confirmed.

“He is conscious and interacting with family members and medical staff.

“He has now left the intensive care unit, but is still being constantly monitored. He is progressing as expected, though no prognosis has yet been released.”

While the club did not give an estimated recovery time, the surgeon who performed the operation said today that the centre-back is unlikely to return this season.
