Luca Toni has defended Verona’s form as he looks ahead to this weekend’s Derby della Scala with Chievo.

The Butei had gone nine games without a victory before Sunday’s win at Udinese, in which Toni scored his 300th career goal, but the big striker believes there are mitigating circumstances.

“If we beat Chievo, our season would once again be considered outstanding,” Toni told TgGialloblu.

“For a club like Verona, it’s normal to struggle for salvation and not to stay in mid-table.

“I’ve heard a lot of talk recently that this team is poor. That’s not true.

“We’ve just had a lot of changes to the squad.

“We’ve had 15 or 16 new players, it takes time to find the right balance.

“In any case, we’ve never been in the relegation zone.”
