The Croatian playmaker today signed a new deal which will keep him at San Siro until 2019, and the 20-year-old admits the club’s ambition convinced him to stay.

“I have to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to renew my contract,” Kovavic told Sky.

“I’m happy, there are five years ahead of me in which to do well. We hope to qualify for the Champions League this season, with the players who have arrived [Shaqiri and Podolski] we hope to get there.

“With these new signings we’re a team built for third place. The project is under construction.

“We have a lot of young players and we’re hoping for a good season.

“As for Podolski and Shaqiri, we were missing wingers and they’re two strong players with European experience who have won titles.

“They’ll give us strength going forward, they’ll bring assists and goals.

“Scudetto next year? Hopefully, but there’s a long road ahead of us, there’s a lot to do. We’re 12th at the moment, it’s a long road from here to the 2016 Champions League Final [at San Siro].”
