Simone Pepe has discussed his long-awaited comeback from injury – saying that VHS tapes were in fashion when he last played!

The winger had played just 38 minutes across three seasons before playing a full match in last night’s 6-1 win over Verona in the Coppa Italia, having struggled with numerous muscular problems.

“When I last played there were videotapes, today there are DVDs,” Pepe joked in an interview with Juventus’ in-house television channel after the match.

“It’s been so many years. That day [the final day of the 2012 season] and Trieste [where the Bianconeri wrapped up the Scudetto that year] are the best memories I have since joining Juventus.

“It’s been two and a half years, but I’m fine, I’m happy. I played 90 minutes, the team played well and when you play in such a good team it’s easy to return after two and a half years.

“The fact that I’m playing in such a strong team which wins when we’re without players like [Andrea] Pirlo and [Carlos] Tevez means there’s a big squad, and that’s important.

“Who supported me through my injuries? My family, my partner and my two children.

“During these two and a half years I’ve had two kids, so I’ve been busy, since I couldn’t do anything! My teammates being close to me was important during the time I was injured."

The Old Lady were awarded a penalty last night, with Pepe allowing Alvaro Morata to take it, despite his own lengthy lay-off.

“I had to take myself off it,” the former Udinese winger reflected.

“Alvaro wanted to score goals, and I was happy to leave it to him, he’s a guy who deserves it and always trains well.

“He wanted to score and it’s right that he took it. He’s a young guy, he needed to score.

“Honestly, I’m 32 years old, it’s true that I haven’t played as much, but he was most in need of a goal and I’m glad he got it because goals are important.”

Finally, the Italian international looked ahead to Sunday, when Verona will once again visit Juventus Stadium.

“It’ll be very different game, we talked about that ourselves after tonight’s match.

“They’ll come here and they won’t be super aggressive like maybe they would be in the Coppa Italia. They’re not thinking of staying up when they play in the Coppa Italia.

“It’ll be a different game because they won’t play openly like tonight.”
