Eder’s fierce free kick routine gave Samp the 1-0 win over Roberto Mancini’s Inter, which allowed them to leapfrog Napoli.

“It was the best Inter performance of the season and they caused us huge problems,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“A fourth consecutive victory and fourth place is certainly something nobody expected when we started the season, but thoroughly deserved.

“However, the enthusiasm is great for the fans and bad for the players, so we must keep our feet on the ground and keep working hard.

“The strength of this squad is the team ethic. Everyone is prepared to pitch in and help each other, whether they start or come off the bench. I love this team spirit, but we also need to remain humble and not forget where we started.”

Did Mihajlovic have some advice for his old friend Mancini?

“We didn’t really speak after the game. It’d be fun in future if we took over a club together, so he’d become a director, I’d be Coach and we’d make sure we could never get fired!”

Mihajlovic was heavily linked with the Milan job this week, but he’s unimpressed with gossip.

“I’ve seen Conte, Montella, Sarri, this week me and I’m curious to see who will be linked to the job next time. I am sorry for my friend Pippo Inzaghi, but this is football and I am focused only on Sampdoria.”
