“It was again a great performance from my lads, who showed courage, sacrifice and fought for every ball,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“They brought home an important victory, as we wanted to go forward and give consistency to our recent results.

“We interpreted the game well and when we went down to 10 men it was tough, but that is precisely when my team tends to really give its best.

“I am very proud of these lads. I had told them that even a man down we could still take the same general approach in attack and defence. My players showed they have the right tenacity, determination and cool heads.”

This was also achieved in the middle of an injury crisis, so the Biancocelesti could get stronger.

“Keita is learning that great talent isn’t necessarily enough, so he is working harder and combining well with his teammates.

“Djordjevic had his operation today and we want to dedicate this victory to him. We’re sure he will come back stronger than ever.”

Lazio look a completely different team to last season, so how much of that is down to Pioli?

“Everyone deserves credit for this campaign. I have always believed positive results are to be spread out evenly. The club has provided me with a strong squad and support, the team is ready to work hard and we brought in some different tactical ideas.

“It is right to be satisfied right now, as we are in the Coppa Italia semi-final and fourth in Serie A, but I still feel that we must keep our foot on the gas until we achieve our objective of qualifying for Europe.”
