Maurizio Sarri’s assistant manager Giovanni Martusciello thought Empoli “deserved more” than a 1-1 draw with Roma.

The Coach was sent off for dissent after an incident in which Miralem Pjanic appeared to rabbit punch Mario Rui in the ribs.

His assistant manager Martusicello spoke to Sky Sport Italia after the match instead.

“We need to move up the table and quite frankly we deserved more this evening. I thought both bookings for Saponara were harsh.

His assistant manager Martusicello spoke to Sky Sport Italia after the match instead.

“We need to move up the table and quite frankly we deserved more this evening. I thought both bookings for Saponara were harsh.

“We faced the game the way we knew we had to and wanted to. In order to survive in Serie A, we have to play this type of football. We are not a team who play dirty or go on the counter. We play our style of football and often it works.

“We must continue creating and that is the only way to get points.”

Riccardo Saponara arrived on loan from Milan, scoring a goal and getting sent off tonight.

“It’s great to have him back, he’s talented and can send teammates through. He’s struggling a little with our training schedule, as he was no longer accustomed to this tempo.
“In order to be better than the other teams, we need to run more and work harder. That’s why our performances come from the hard work we do during the week.”
