Domenico Di Carlo praised Cesena for their “courage” in holding Juventus 2-2 and explained his penalty protest.

The Sea Horses had taken an early lead, then came back from 2-1 down for the 2-2 draw, earned despite a late missed Arturo Vidal penalty.

“We began this journey when I arrived, trying to speed up the tempo of this team and give them courage,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ve been putting in some good performances recently, apart from the deserved 2-0 defeat to Empoli. It was tough for us to put Juventus under pressure, but I asked my players for courage and everything we tested out in training worked tonight.

“Actually, I thought Cesena deserved something more than a draw tonight.”

Di Carlo was sent off for dissent when Juve were awarded a penalty for handball on Fernando Llorente’s overhead kick.

“I wasn’t protesting at the penalty. I was complaining about what I thought was a ball that had gone out of play just before that, I think with Evra on the touchline.

“I was wrong to protest in such an obvious way, although I didn’t say anything offensive. I apologise.”

Stephan Lichtsteiner also risked a second yellow card in the final stages, but Di Carlo has a refreshingly un-Italian approach.

“Last week we had some penalty decisions that didn’t go our way, but we didn’t say anything and will continue that approach now. We go into every weekend aware that mistakes can happen and we keep our mouths shut, but the important thing is that everyone else keeps quiet when decisions go against them. That way everyone would be happier.”

Milan Djuric opened the scoring and provided the assist, knocking down a cross for Franco Brienza.

“We do practice these moves in training. When we struggle to find room down the flanks, we try to find Djuric so he can hold up the ball and invite Brienza to come forward.

“I have to compliment my players, because we all know that when you’re 2-1 down to Juventus you have to open up and they can punish you with half a chance. We remained concentrated and were playing too well not to equalise.”
