Mario Gomez and Mohamed Salah beat Tottenham 2-0, qualifying for the Europa League Last 16, 3-1 on aggregate.

The first leg ended 1-1 at White Hart Lane, giving the Viola a precious away goal. Ciprian Tatarusanu and Borja Valero were injured, so Norberto Neto had to make his first appearance since refusing to sign a new contract.

Milan Badel drilled wide, Erik Lamela’s effort was straight at Neto, Mario Gomez showed a marked lack of pace to waste a counter, while Stefan Savic charged down a Benjamin Stambouli attempt from a corner.

Bad news for Vincenzo Montella, who also lost Mati Fernandez to injury after just 25 minutes, so Alberto Aquilani came on.

Tottenham wasted an astonishing chance, as they went on the counter two against none, but Roberto Soldado tried to roll across for Nacer Chadli and the desperately under-hit pass was easily intercepted by Neto.

Gomez had another promising move charged down in the box by an arm, but it ricocheted off his foot first, so could not be considered voluntary. Mohamed Salah also failed to make the most of a few solid runs.

After the restart, Badelj scuffed a great opportunity straight at Hugo Lloris, but Gomez did take his chance on the counter-attack. It was horribly given away in the centre-circle by Federico Fazio to Badelj and Gomez sprinted forward, keeping his cool to slide the finish past Lloris.

Fiorentina should’ve put the result beyond doubt on 61 minutes, but Joaquin robbed Erik Lamela and Salah fired straight at Lloris’ legs.

Salah did make the most of his next opportunity and doubled the Viola advantage. He completed a give-and-go with Gomez thanks to an extremely sluggish Jan Vertonghen attempt to intercept in the box and smashed past Lloris.

Harry Kane tapped in from point-blank range on a free kick, but it was patently offside, while Neto beat away a Christian Eriksen effort.
