Iachini had said last week he would retain Edgar Barreto as his captain even after contract renewal talks broke down.

The midfielder is suspended this weekend and Iachini remained tight-lipped on whether the situation had changed following President Maurizio Zamparini’s public complaints.

“I’ve known Zamparini for many years and his words are always for the good of the team. There is no problem.

“As for Barreto, I will only say that the captain for this match will be Stefano Sorrentino.

“Empoli have been playing together as a unit for three years and play by heart. This is an added bonus for any team. We should also keep a special eye out for their set-piece routines.”

Francesco Bolzoni and Achraf Lazaar are out injured, while Enzo Maresca is not 100 per cent fit.

It’s likely Robin Quaison will challenge for a starting spot with Andrea Belotti.
