President of the Referees’ Association Marcello Nicchi claims goal-line technology “can co-exist” with extra officials.

In Serie A goal-line technology should be introduced next season, but they do currently use goal-line referees.

“I hope they will stay as well next term,” AIA President Nicchi told news agency ANSA.

“However, they need to hurry up with the technology, as they cannot keep dragging their heels on this beyond March. It’s purely a structural issue.”

There are still disagreements over who will pay for the installation and running of the technology.

On top of that, there are also several different goal-line technology systems in the running.

“They are trying to figure out the best method, then will invite bids to ascertain costs. We explained how the mechanism works and the necessity or positivity of additional referees.

“Now the Lega Serie A will evaluate, but I get the feeling we all agree the two systems can co-exist.”
