“We must step on to the field fully aware it won’t be easy, because Cagliari are fired up as if this was the game of the season for them.

“They changed Coach this week and have everything it takes to play with even more determination. We must play as a team that is fighting to avoid relegation and mustn’t think we are already safe.

“The Sardinians will throw everything at us and gamble with their campaign. If we don’t do the same, we risk losing before it’s even begun.”

Gianfranco Zola was sacked after one point from six rounds and Zeman brought back in, but his biggest victory on the Cagliari bench was 4-0 away to Empoli.

“I would hope the team wants to make up for that bad result,” continued Sarri.

“Cagliari are alive and kicking, but above all a better side than their current position would suggest. They were never dominated by opponents and have good individuals all over the pitch.”

There was a boost for Empoli when Manuel Pucciarelli surprisingly renewed his contract until 2017, ending his exile.

“We are happy to have him back. He trained normally all week and I hope the clarification gave him further motivation to do well.”
