Roberto Mancini admits Inter weren’t “sharp or aggressive” against Cesena and he was “too optimistic” to target third place.

Rodrigo Palacio equalised after a Gregoire Defrel lob for the Nerazzurri’s second consecutive Serie A draw.

“The first half was below par and Cesena realised they could cause problems for us by running harder. We weren’t sharp or aggressive,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“After the break we scored straight away and had many chances, but were so eager to win that we made mistakes on even the easiest things. I don’t think it was a good performance, to be honest.”

Mancini seemed unusually downbeat and even upset after the final whistle.

“With a win we would’ve climbed to 39 points with 11 rounds to go. Now it’s going to be pretty difficult to reach third place. With a victory we could’ve had hope, but there are too many teams in front of us now.

“At the moment there’s no point talking about third place and it’s not even logical to do so.

“I think all players want to do better, but unfortunately this team is improving slowly and alternating good performances with negative ones. We can only work and it might take more time to improve.

“Perhaps it is my fault, I am an optimist by nature and thought we could achieve something more in less time. It’s bad for our fans, as they suffer, but we are suffering too.

“I am always optimistic and see my players working as hard as possible, so this is a very disappointing draw. Cesena did very well and deserved to get a point out of it.”

This 1-1 draw came after a 3-1 drubbing by Wolfsburg in the Europa League and the second leg is on Thursday.

“We want to play and at times make mistakes, even big ones. Wolfsburg are a very strong side, but without our errors it probably would’ve been a draw.

“Obviously if you’re going to make silly errors, the opposition is going to pounce on them.”
