Vincenzo Montella felt Fiorentina’s comeback to beat Milan was “the spirit that can aim for the Champions League.”

The Viola were 1-0 down to a Mattia Destro goal, but scored twice in the last eight minutes for the 2-1 victory.

“We won a very important match in which we ran into quite a few difficulties, above all in the first half,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.

Fiorentina are now only one point behind Napoli and five adrift of Lazio in third place.

“We suffered Milan’s counter-attacks and they could’ve taken the lead earlier. After the break we dominated only to concede against the run of play.

“That goal gave the team an important mental strength, the right spirit, the spirit that can aim for the Champions League.

“Joaquin came on well, but I liked the whole team. Everyone sacrificed themselves and Josip Ilicic was excellent. Aleandro Rosi played on through cramp, Alberto Gilardino was exhausted. We played like a mature team and deserved this victory.”

Montella has been repeatedly linked with the Milan job, so has he put the final nail in Pippo Inzaghi’s coffin?

“This experience will really help him to grow as a Coach.”
