Sinisa Mihajlovic said he told Sampdoria to “face Roma without the fear of defeat” and sets his sights on Inter next.

This third consecutive victory put the Blucerchiati joint fifth with Fiorentina, just one point behind Napoli.

“It was a great victory. The first half-hour was balanced, then Roma started playing and put us under pressure,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia after a 2-0 win.

This third consecutive victory put the Blucerchiati joint fifth with Fiorentina, just one point behind Napoli.

“It was a great victory. The first half-hour was balanced, then Roma started playing and put us under pressure,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia after a 2-0 win.

“We prepared the game like this, we knew it would not be easy in this situation and Roma have players who can change it at any moment.

“We sacrificed ourselves, defending when necessary and daring when necessary. We drew with Roma earlier this season and I said if we played that way again we could win. That is what happened.

“Everyone moved as a unit to close Roma down and even Samuel Eto’o came back to help out. When you play at Roma and keep a clean sheet – thanks also to a great Emiliano Viviano performance – it is a positive performance all round.

“I told my players we could only win if we played without the fear of defeat and kept the belief in ourselves.

“My teams might take a few more risks than others, but that is because we play to win and not to avoid losing. That’s my approach and the team shares that view.

“Naturally, you’re going to run risks against Roma, but if we lose then at least we have no regrets.”

Samp got back on track after a dip in form, which coincided with selling Manolo Gabbiadini to Napoli in January.

“It’s true we had a few difficulties, but that’s only because with two new players Luis Muriel and Eto’o were not fully fit, so we didn’t have enough alternatives. Once they got back in shape, we became more unpredictable and now have three consecutive victories.

“However, this victory will be worth little if we don’t beat Inter next week. It’s true all the teams who play in Europe have struggled this week, as Napoli and Torino lost, Inter were held and Fiorentina only won right at the death.”
