Vincenzo Montella is concerned Roma “pride” will kick-start their campaign against Fiorentina in the Europa League.

The first leg ended 1-1 in Florence and that away goal could yet prove decisive at the Stadio Olimpico.

“The teams know each other pretty well and neither side was happy when we were put together in the draw,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“It is a difficult game and we’re happy to play it. The tie is open to any result. My squad is much more prepared than in the past, as we’ve played many important matches now and gained experience.”

Roma’s recent form, culminating in a 2-0 home defeat to Sampdoria on Monday, means the crowd may well turn on their own team.

“I don’t know, that’ll depend on how the game develops. Roma fans have always been close to the side even in difficult moments.

“We cannot rely on this, as I know the passion of the Roma fans, plus the quality of their players. Unfortunately, what I do expect is for their pride to emerge and we must prepare the game without thinking about these external factors.”

Montella was asked if he had been in contact with his old Roma teammate Francesco Totti.

“No, but we didn’t talk before the other games either, so it’s better this way.”

Mario Gomez and Stefan Savic have recovered to be in the squad, though David Pizarro remains sidelined.

“Mario passed the fitness tests, trained with the group and pushed hard to be at our disposal. I hope he’ll be ready tomorrow and I have no doubts that he will.

“Khouma Babacar is also in good shape and ready to play.”
