Palermo talent Franco Vazquez pledged to “honour the Italy shirt” after being called up to face Bulgaria and England.

The Argentine attacking midfielder received his first call for the Euro 2016 qualifier in Sofia on March 28 and friendly with England on March 31.

“I am truly happy for this call-up and will do everything I can to honour the Italy shirt,” said Vazquez.

The 26-year-old has scored seven Serie A goals this season and provided 10 assists, but also hit the woodwork nine times – more than any other player in the League.

“I’m so proud of this call and the credit must be divided with all my teammates. I thank them, as without their support I could not have achieved this.

“Obviously I also thank the club and the President, but I must also dedicate a thought to my girlfriend and my family.”

Vazquez is the latest in a long line of Oriundi – South Americans who play for Italy due to their roots – and was asked if he’d like to follow in the footsteps of Mauro German Camoranesi.

“He won the World Cup, whereas I haven’t even set foot on the pitch yet. Obviously it would be a dream to match his achievements.”

There is another new Oriundo in the current squad named by Antonio Conte, as Sampdoria’s Brazilian striker Eder is also included.
