Zdenek Zeman said Cagliari have “forgotten” how to play his football, but felt Milan’s contentious penalty was decisive.

The Coach has picked up just one point in two games since returning to replace Gianfranco Zola, so the Sardinians remain in the relegation zone.

“It’s disappointing. At this time we try to do everything, but unfortunately the third goal made it difficult and knocked the wind out of our sails,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a 3-1 defeat.

The third goal was a penalty, although replays make it clear the contact – if indeed it was a foul – was several yards outside the area.

“We all saw it was outside the box, but those who had to make the decision thought otherwise. It’s a pity, we are a side who need to secure our safety.

“It means we will have to win on our own steam and hopefully our opponents will win on their own steam too.

“Do I hope to score an offside goal? No, I only want good goals. I came back here because I thought we could fight it out with everyone except maybe Juventus and we have to keep trying.

“In the last three months we’ve forgotten a few things, but I am generally satisfied. We are unable to play consistently at a high tempo, but when it works it goes very well. At times we keep hold of the ball too much, but more out of desperation than as a plan.”

Cagliari are still in the bottom three and Chievo’s 1-0 victory over Palermo today will further dent their chances of safety.

“We just have to play our game, not wait to see who wins or loses elsewhere. There are another 10 games and I hope the team will link up better to fight with all its strength.”
