The Ducali man played with La Viola between 2011 and 2013, and he made his empathy with them clear when he was asked how far they can go this season.

“As far as possible. The Viola are playing a very positive season, confirming that they belong in the higher levels.

“They must pose no limits to their achievements, because they've finally found the continuity they were lacking to make it to the next level.

“Fiorentina have a first-class group, supported by an impeccable club organization. I hope my former teammates can finally lift a trophy.

“It would be a well-deserved prize for the Della Valle brothers and for a passionate group of supporters like Fiorentina's.”

Cassani was also asked about Mohamed Salah's influence on the Fiorentina squad.

“He really impressed me for how quickly he was able to find his feet in a demanding environment like the one in Florence,” Cassani replied.

“Integrating oneself into the mechanisms of a team like Fiorentina isn't easy, but the Egyptian managed to do that in a very short time, and he was able to make their play more incisive.

“They lost a talented and decisive player like [Juan] Cuadrado, but they managed to find another one, different in his characteristics but no less decisive.”

The 31-year-old was not at his best under Montella, but he believes the reason was tactical.

“It's not easy to change the characteristics of a footballer, forcing him to play in different roles. I understand the trouble that [Micah] Richards is undergoing.

“Like me, he gives his best as part of a four-man defence. Montella is a modern and intelligent Coach, he knows how to interpret games and he was always fair with me, but let's say that we never really found each other.”
