The Blucerchiati saw their Roberto Soriano opener wiped out by an Alfred Duncan deflection on Nigel de Jong’s overhead kick.

This point puts them joint fifth with Fiorentina, but crucially keeps a seven-point advantage over Milan.

“We were unable to play the first half the way we wanted to because we made too many misplaced passes. It’s not the only time we’ve done that, so it’s an issue of character,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia after a 1-1 draw.

“We changed system and moved players around after the break. Once we went in front, we should’ve finished the game, as for 10 minutes after the goal Milan were really struggling.
“Instead of pressing on the gas, we settled for the 1-0 lead and tried to control the game. That’s something we are really not good at.

“We conceded the equaliser and risked losing it with Suso’s chance against the woodwork. Now our next game against Cesena becomes very important and they’ll give everything, as it’s the last chance saloon.

“Milan are still Milan. There are eight rounds to go and there’s a seven-point gap, while Torino are six behind.

“The important thing is that our destiny is in our hands and we will try to take this wonderful season to its natural conclusion with a place in Europe. It becomes tougher for the chasing pack, but it’s fundamental that we’re in control.”

Mihajlovic started out with a 4-2-3-1 system and then adjusted it during the game.

“We put Eder on Abate and Cerci, while Eto’o naturally cuts into the centre and therefore we didn’t have much width.

“Later on we changed to 4-3-3 with an extra midfielder like Alfred and Muriel should’ve done better running into the spaces that opened up.”

Milan and Napoli are among the clubs linked with Mihajlovic, so he was asked what he’d most be interested in if moving on.

“The first issue is the project and everything that could happen at Sampdoria or anywhere. At the moment my primary thought is not to look elsewhere.

“I came to Sampdoria out of a sense of love and gratitude. We are having a great season and if we go into Europe my debt will be paid. If we don’t, then we’ll see.

“We have to focus now, as I tell my lads you see the winning horse at the finish line, not halfway round. It’s no good running hundreds of metres if they over-take you at the final strait.

“I haven’t made a decision yet. I can’t take people for a ride. When I do decide, I’ll say it out loud. I don’t even want to think about it right now, as I’m too smart to get distracted by these rumours and I am sure my players will react the same way.

“There will be time to think about all this later.”
