“The team put in a great performance with extraordinary intensity, quality and created so many chances.
“We didn’t finish them and wasted a lot of energy to secure this qualification,” the Coach told Sport Mediaset.
“When we play this well, it would be better to get the goals early on and not suffer to the end.
“All I have tonight is pleasure and satisfaction, as the group really deserved to get this qualification.”
Mario Gomez scored a bizarre goal, as he seemed to be trying to control a wayward Joaquin shot when it bounced in off his knee.
“I don’t know if it was a fortunate goal as such, because Gomez remained optimistic and chased the shot to be there in case,” said former striker Montella.
Tomorrow there will be the Europa League semi-final draw, where Fiorentina could pick Napoli, Sevilla or Dnipro.
“I certainly want to avoid Napoli. The rest we’ll see. Now there are only four teams left, the next games will inevitably be difficult.”
The team had been jeered off the field on Monday night after a 1-0 home defeat to Hellas Verona, but Montella insisted squad rotation was necessary.
“I prepared the best team for the game I wanted to approach. If these players had not rested on Monday, they would really not have been able to put in this level of performance.
“I am pleased we qualified for the players, who deserve it for their hard work and unity, the fans and the club.”
