The Orobici would’ve been safe anyway with a point, but didn’t even need that because Cagliari lost 1-0 at home to Palermo.

“There has never been such a painless defeat,” smiled the Coach on Sky Sport Italia.

“We wanted to get a positive result today, but ran into a Genoa side that was in great shape and extremely motivated.

“After the break, when news filtered through that Cagliari were losing, we did seem to lay off the intensity and didn’t play the way we should’ve done.

“To be safe with two rounds to spare is an excellent result.”

Reja replaced long-term Coach Stefano Colantuono and steered Atalanta to safety.

“I mainly had to rebuild the right spirit, focusing less on defence and more on attack. We did get some great results, as it’s not easy to get points off Roma, Napoli and Lazio.

“The 13 points we picked up in 10 rounds allowed us to stay in the top flight.”
