Roberto Mancini admits European hopes are gone after a 3-2 defeat to Genoa, but “we are on the right track.”

The Nerazzurri have repeatedly wasted chances to close up on the top places and twice fumbled a lead at Marassi to lose 3-2 tonight.

“We tried, but for what we did in the last 14-15 rounds I thought we could’ve got into Europe,” Mancini told Sky Sport Italia.

“Unfortunately we play good football and then make these crazy mistakes that are difficult to recover from.

“We conceded one goal today and two last week that were just absurd. Inter cannot concede goals like that.”

Asked whether Andrea Ranocchia or Samir Handanovic was more to blame for the howler, Mancini dodged the question.

“Unfortunately it happened, so there’s no point assigning blame at this stage. We are demoralised enough.

“If I have to lose, I prefer to do it like this, by attacking and going for the victory. It was a spectacular game with both teams going for the win.

“We had several chances to score more goals and hit the woodwork twice. As we improved our mentality and our approach to matches, we have to work on the defence and getting rid of these mistakes.

“I am optimistic, but results are not on our side despite the performances. This identity and approach is a good start to build on for next season.

“It’s a shame we’re not going into Europe, so we feel bad for the fans and the President.”

Will failing to qualify for Europe affect Inter’s transfer strategy and are some of these players simply not up to the Inter standard?

“It’s difficult to discuss the market now. The lads worked hard, totally changed their approach and mentality. Unfortunately we made many mistakes in decisive games and you pay for those in Serie A.

“The results haven’t been what we wanted, but we are on the right track. Inter have improved a great deal as a team in recent months.

“Obviously if we sign more world class players, it’ll help the others raise their game and the youngsters to improve.”
