Gian Piero Gasperini hailed Genoa after a 3-2 victory over Inter. “It would be an injustice if we don’t get into Europe.”

The Grifone are flying high in fifth place, but may well not be allowed into the Europa League because the club was denied a UEFA licence.

They did not fill out the paperwork correctly, failed to name an alternative stadium to the Luigi Ferraris – which is not up to code – and hadn’t completely resolved some transfer issues.

“It was the most satisfying and wonderful night of my time at Genoa. We had many great moments, but this one gives me the most satisfaction, maybe because it is the most immediate,” Gasp told Sky Sport Italia.

They had not beaten Inter here for 20 years and it was their fourth consecutive victory.

“It would be an injustice if this team didn’t get into Europe, as we had no ambitions to finish this high and did extraordinary things throughout the campaign.

“We had a very strong first half to the season too and the performances were always good. People perhaps didn’t pay as much attention to Genoa, but in terms of attacking football, goals and quality of football, we’ve been right up there.

“The thing that satisfies me the most is to see how this Genoa is expressing my style of football. We had other great years, like the time we finished fourth with 68 points.

“In this case it feels special because we really bonded and did not expect to achieve these results. Even after changing many players in January, the newcomers all got straight into it.

“As the season went on, we’ve earned more credibility in the media with more spectacular football, even though we actually got more points in the first half of the campaign.”

Gasperini had particular enjoyment beating Inter, the side that famously sacked him after just a few weeks.

“That was an experience that in hindsight I’d have approached differently. I should’ve been stronger going in and demand the club give me more support.

“That experience was a learning curve, though it also threatened to cut my career short, but fortunately I came back to Genoa. It was destiny.”
