“It was a positive season for the team. There were a few too many disappointments, usually slip-ups on home turf, otherwise it would’ve been perfect by reaching two Finals.”

Montella is set to meet Andrea Della Valle later today to discuss whether he will stay at the Stadio Franchi.

“I often reflect on my situation, which at times isn’t too good for me. I am relaxed, we’ll see what happens in this meeting and what we can do going forward.

“We need to clarify what the club wants to do and what it can do. It’s not about the last three years, but going forward, understanding how, in what way and with what budget. Unfortunately, that’s what football is about now.

“We want to end the season well in front of the home fans. We want to consolidate our position and, if fate gives us a hand, to finish fourth.

“I think I have many defects, but I am honest and at times too plain-speaking for my role. Having said that, we need to compare our objectives to see what we share and what we don’t. It’s a matter of honesty.

“Thanks to everyone we have done what we’ve done. Some might appreciate it more or less, but I believe this team did great things.

“It’s true we could’ve achieved more, but I think this technical journey has been completed. We have to rebuild.

“With the budget that we had, it will be difficult to do better, also to do the same and much easier to do worse.

“This squad could resume with Montella or without Montella. It’s about bridging the gap with the other clubs, which financially exists, and the only way of doing that is with planning.

“If we understand all that, we can get an extra point. If we don’t, we lose a point.”

Montella had bitterly criticised the fans for ‘deriding’ the team during the Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla, but tried to calm that storm.

“Fans are irrational in their nature, as passion makes you irrational and otherwise they wouldn’t travel round to follow the team!

“I have to say the supporters showed great humility to cheer on the team through highs and lows and I can only be happy with the way the fans have treated me.”
