“The whole game was affected by that incident, but we came here to play against a quality side like Croatia on level terms and we did it.

“We remain satisfied with our performance anyway. Do I feel robbed? No, everyone saw my goal was valid.

“We reacted with character against a very strong side, so I am satisfied.”

El Shaarawy’s last appearance for Italy was in November 2014, another 1-1 draw with Croatia, as he missed most of 2015 with a fractured foot.

“I can say that I worked very hard over these months to get back in shape. I must thank Conte for encouraging and supporting me. I am happy to be fit again and hope to begin next season even stronger.”

He will find a new teammate at Milan, as a deal is done for €35m signing Jackson Martinez from Porto.

“He is a great striker, so I am happy. He can give us a big hand. Where will I be next year? I have a contract with Milan.”
