“When I got the call, I thought that Napoli wanted to buy a Carpi player. It’s a dream come true to be here and I must prove myself in this role.

“I will try to build a younger Napoli and one with great human qualities. I’ve known Sarri for 20 years, but he was chosen before I got here.”

There have been reports that star striker Higuain will seek a transfer after Napoli failed to qualify for the Champions League, as Juventus and Milan are among those linked with a shock bid.

“Higuain is staying. A few Italian clubs asked for information, but he is staying.”

The Partenopei are in negotiations with Torino for Darmian, reportedly offering €10m plus Jorginho and Duvan Zapata.

“Zapata has been requested by big clubs, but he will only go on loan, as we don’t want to lose him,” continued Giuntoli.

“It’s true that we are talking to Torino and they could be interested in Jorginho and Omar El Kaddouri. Our job is to do as little as possible with regards to the attack.

“Riccardo Saponara? Our priorities are defence and midfield.”
