This latest incident is part of the on-going battle between club and local council over necessary refurbishment of the stadium.

Italian rock star Rossi is due to perform a concert at the Stadio San Paolo on Friday and this morning the company began setting up the stage and lighting rig.

However, Napoli have sole use of the playing turf area until Tuesday and even called the police to protest, as the pitch was not properly protected.

The club also posted pictures of the damaged grass on its official Twitter account.

“We wanted to point out the situation and this is why we went to the police,” explained Napoli head of operations Alessandro Formisano.

“I hope corrections will be made, as we are worried about the condition of our playing turf.”

Concert organiser Giuseppe Gomez noted “this is the protocol we use in every stadium in Italy. We’ll adopt even more precautions and work extra hours to ensure the work is completed in time.

“We’ll also replace the damaged areas of the turf at our expense.”
