Inter striker Mauro Icardi says he never considered leaving the Nerazzurri and targets the Champions League next season.

The 22-year-old, who finished as joint Serie A top scorer last season with Luca Toni, spoke of his pride at representing Inter in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

“The Capocannoniere title wasn’t linked to the contract renewal because we had been talking about my contract for a while,” he said.

“The signature came at the end of the season when my head was clearer, but my desire was always clear: I wanted to stay at Inter and I was happy.

“I honestly never thought about leaving. I heard the rumours about other clubs that wanted me, but from the first moment I gave my total availability to staying here.

“I made a clear choice when I joined Inter from Sampdoria – I could’ve gone to other clubs, but wanted the Nerazzurri shirt because for me it’s the top.

“Even when I had my agent Wanda [Nara, Icardi’s wife] always assisted me with negotiations because she’s very good at them. She wants the best for me and my family.

“The Inter directors are building a strong team that is able to return to the Champions League straight away.

“They’ve made important investments and changed a lot from last year –the objective is to bring Inter back to first place.

“We certainly must avoid committing the errors of the past – we can’t throw away any more points in a stupid manner, especially at home.”
