The Nerazzurri certainly got off to a strong start, taking the lead within four minutes when Rodrigo Palacio was sent clear on goal by Geoffrey Kondogbia.

Carpi secured a surprise equaliser through Kevin Lasagna, who pounced on a defensive error and unfortunate ricochet off Samir Handanovic.

However, Icardi nodded in and Hernanes scored a sensational free kick to turn it back in their favour.

After the restart Yuto Nagatomo’s strike ricocheted off the woodwork, finding Samuele Longo ready to tap in the rebound.

Ryder Matos impressed for Carpi, on loan from Fiorentina, as he hit the upright and then scored with a header following another defensive error.

Once again, Xherdan Shaqiri was not even on the bench, as he’s on the verge of a transfer to Schalke 04.
