FIFA President Sepp Blatter has confirmed he will not stand for re-election on February 26.
It was announced earlier today that extraordindary elections would take place at the beginning of next year, but it was not clear whether the 79-year-old would stand.
However, at a Press conference today, the President of world football’s governing body confirmed he would not be continuing in the role.
“I will not be a candidate for election in 2016,” Blatter confirmed.
“I cannot be the new president because I'm an old president.
“It’s a question of logic. We will never have two Presidents, so if we have a new President, then there must be a passage of the old President to the new one.
“I have put forward my mandate, I have never resigned from the position, I will never do that. On February 26, FIFA will have a new President.”
Despite announcing new rules on salary, Blatter refused to reveal his own earnings, with reforms to be voted on at the next FIFA congress.
