Igli Tare says that if Lazio can stay in the Champions League, they'll have their 'big quality leap in two, three, four years'.

The Biancocelesti's sporting director is under pressure because of the team's poor form shown over the summer, but in an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport he defended the team's long-term plans.

“Our project was never concealed, we've always been clear,” he said.

“I hear talk of reinforcements. We haven't been trying to fool any of our supporters.

“I talked of our ideas and we made some sacrifices, but unlike others, we did not sell our biggest players.

“Now we must build our own prodigies at home.

“The big leap in quality, if we can keep up certain results while remaining in the Champions League, will be possible in two, three, four years.”

Tare was then asked whether Lazio's market was closed.

“We'll get a midfielder, I hope very soon. Then there are boys and talents on whom we already invested.

“[Wesley] Hoedt, for example, played an excellent game in spite of his mistake on Mainz's first goal.

“He only just started, he's 20 years old, let's give him time.

“He needs that, and so do the others. There's complete faith in this team, which is backed by technical and moral values.

“We trust the work done by [Coach Stefano] Pioli and the rest of the staff. We won't change that over the results of our preliminaries.”
