Wojciech Szczesny said Roma need “a few weeks to get to know each other” after losing his debut 2-0 to Sporting CP.

The goalkeeper arrived on loan from Arsenal this week and came on for the second half, performing some great saves despite the result.

“It’s good to have my first game under the belt, it was a good experience,” he told Roma TV.

“I've had a really good week of training with the boys, there’s a fantastic group of players here. Obviously we must set the standard higher for ourselves because when you play for a big club there are no friendly games and you have to win. So the result is really bad.”

This was his first match situation with his new teammates and the Polish international admits there’s a long way to go.

“It's not good because we lost but we try to talk to each other every day in training in order to learn our game and get to know each other.

“I'm trying to learn Italian, I've had a week of lessons every day and I'm making progress. I try to speak with them obviously. Some of the guys speak good English too.

“If you give us a few weeks, the connection and the understanding between us will be good.”

Szczesny was impressed with Roma Coach Rudi Garcia.

“He’s a great Coach. I’ve only trained with him for a week, but he’s a good guy with a great personality. He takes charge of the group – he’s a leader.”
