Giorgio Chiellini said “it’s practically done” for Italy in Euro 2016 after beating Bulgaria and Malta 1-0 this week.

“We knew these two games were important. The results were minimal, but we put in the effort and deserved more,” Chiellini told Rai Sport.

“Now in Europe all matches are difficult. We made a step forwards today, put in a fine performance and must build on that so we can secure qualification as soon as possible.”

Norway beat Croatia 2-0 today, so the Azzurri are top of Group H on 18 points, followed by the Scandinavians on 16 and Croatia 14.

“We have to win in Azerbaijan and then it’s practically done. We would’ve preferred mathematical certainty earlier, but we kept two clean sheets and two victories, so we go forward with increased belief and confidence.”

Daniele De Rossi converted the penalty, but was also sent off for a reaction foul.

“Unfortunately I didn’t see what happened. It’s a shame for Daniele, as he was playing very well and it would’ve been an important boost for him psychologically.

“We have to grow, but I think we can take many positives from this evening.”
