The Premier League club is already preparing for the January transfer window and two English papers claim they’re looking to Italy for inspiration.

The Daily Star maintains the Blues have set their sights on Empoli creative midfielder Saponara, who has been on sparkling form for the last year.

He struggled for playing time at Milan, but has been remarkable since moving back to Empoli in January, scoring seven goals in his last 10 Serie A games.

Napoli had already tried to sign 23-year-old Saponara over the summer, but Empoli rebuffed all their advances.

It’s reported Everton plan to offer £4.5m to tempt him into a move to the Premier League mid-season.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool Echo claims Everton are also readying a January proposal for Napoli winger Mertens.

The 28-year-old Belgium international bagged a brace on Thursday in the 5-0 Europa League demolition of Club Brugge.

He had been a target for Inter over the summer, but has pushed his way back into Coach Maurizio Sarri’s first team pick.
