Fiorentina Coach Paulo Sousa “won’t hold back” ambitions after going top of the table with a 4-1 win at Inter.

The Viola hadn’t been Serie A leaders since February 1999 – a gap of 17 years.

“The game started well, we gave consistency to the beginning of our season and dominated every area of the play, both attacking and defending,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

Having won five out of six games, can the Tuscans now realistically challenge for the Scudetto?

“Football is like this in Latin countries, it goes from zero to 80. I already said there were other teams who invested heavily for that, but I won’t hold back either, as we have the quality to face every match knowing we can win.

“I told the lads from the start I want a team always ready to take on anyone, always maintaining our approach. We have principles of football that we work hard on and as time goes on this will give us more confidence going forward.

“When I realised I wanted to be a Coach, I decided never to think about myself. It’s all about the team, improving the unit and working together.

“My idea of football and how I played obviously will influence my approach too. I believe you control a game with the ball, not without it, but at the same time I don’t forget the importance of defending. I learned that during my many years playing in Italy!”

Milan Badelj is making a big difference in midfield for the Viola.

“He has improved a lot, as he is understanding more and more his position. He likes to play the ball, to be involved in moves, and also helps us to keep control of the game in a very important role.”
