Antonio Conte warns he “won’t be conditioned by anyone” when choosing his Italy squad for Euro 2016 and maybe beyond.

The CT spoke to RAI Sport ahead of tonight’s final qualifier against Norway in Rome, which kicks off at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“I will not let myself be conditioned by anyone, not the winds coming from the north, centre or south,” declared Conte when asked about choosing his players for the tournament.

“Nor will I be softened by big names or pressure from the media, which have always been there. At the Euros no target is beyond us. We might not be starting as favourites, but we’ll be a problem for everyone we meet.

“I say in any case that a Coach is evaluated only by his results, whereas the work performed should also count for something.”

The Federation has repeatedly offered to extend his contract beyond Euro 2016, but Conte explained why he’s so hesitant.

“It will be a competitive Nazionale anyway, regardless of my contract situation. History teaches us many things.

“Cesare Prandelli went to the World Cup with an extension and Italy went out in the first round, so he resigned.

“Marcello Lippi won the World Cup when everyone already knew he would be leaving after the competition. Will I renew my contract up to the World Cup? Never say never.

“I have always envied the Coaches who got to take part in a European Championship or World Cup, so to be here now is fantastic.

“I played in them and during those games you can feel all of Italy pushing you forward.”

Conte has been linked with the Roma job should Rudi Garcia fail to win the Scudetto this season.

“Rome is a wonderful city that I learned to appreciate by coming here to work as Coach of Italy, but the Giallorossi fans and club should relax. Garcia is an excellent Coach and I respect him a great deal."
