Marco Giampaolo felt Empoli’s performance against Roma was good until that Miralem Pjanic moment of magic.

The Tuscans were eventually beaten 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico with three goals in 12 minutes.

“We put in a strong performance, the right one that we needed in the circumstances,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“I can only compliment my team, as we were missing a lot of important players, but were up to the task with a fine performance.

“Up until the Pjanic free kick we were in the game, it was a balanced encounter and we had our chances to score too.

“He did well to score that goal, then we conceded straight afterwards on a corner. Getting a result away to Roma is no easy feat, especially for us, but we continued to cause them problems to the end.

“We put in the performance that we had planned, trying to keep Roma away from our goal by playing in their half. We managed it largely for 80 minutes, then you can only do so much against that quality.”
