Stefano Pioli celebrated Lazio’s victory over Rosenborg, but warned Mauricio “we can’t keep making these mistakes.”

Mauricio was sent off after just six minutes, his fourth red card in only 28 games for the club, but 10-man Lazio still emerged with a 3-1 Europa League win.

“I knew this was going to be a difficult and balanced group, so it was very important for us to win tonight,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The match got off to a bad start and we can’t keep making these mistakes. I saw a good response from my players and it required extra effort in the circumstances.

“Mauricio was seriously naïve and his error makes you think there was a lack of concentration. It cannot happen in such a delicate role as centre-back.

“We have to eliminate certain distractions if we want to be ambitious and do well in Europe.

“Running for your teammate and your squad is in our mentality. We needed Stefano Mauri’s experience this evening even in a position he’s not accustomed to, as we’d tested him out there during the week.”

St-Etienne surprisingly won 1-0 away to last year’s beaten Europa League Finalists Dnipro, so Lazio go three points clear at the top of their group.

“There are many positive aspects from this game, but we mustn’t make the same mistakes all over again. We had studied our opponents carefully and asked for sacrifice from our wingers. I didn’t want to take quality away from my team.

“We had a difficult summer, but I am seeing the real Lazio again. We have the right quality and spirit, which we had been lacking before.

“Now we fight and know of our capabilities. It’s a shame we lost on Sunday against Sassuolo, as we just ran into a hiccup, but we’re on the right track.”
