Wojciech Szczesny admits Roma's defeat to BATE Borisov was due to his 'bad mistake', while discussing his save against Juventus.

The Polish goalkeeper has been alternating light and dark with the Giallorossi this season, but most would agree he deserves his starter's shirt.

In an interview with Sky Sport Italia, the 25-year-old discussed his team and his teammates.

“Gervinho did not fail at Arsenal, he simply didn't leave a permanent mark,” he said. “He had some positive moments but in a club of that size the competition is always immense.

“He had the opportunity to come to Rome and he took it. He's a great player, he proved he can score, and he's a danger on the counter when we're playing away.

“Morgan [De Sanctis] was fantastic with me from the very first day. His English is excellent and he taught me the first few words in Italian.

“I try learning from him. I observe him in training, he's very experienced.”

Szczesny's save on a Leonardo Bonucci header was decisive in letting Roma win 2-1 against Juventus in August.

“It wasn't the best save in my career. A save becomes memorable according to the moment. That was a good one, but I hope to have some more decisive ones over the season.

“I take responsibility for my mistakes. I made a big one against BATE Borisov.

“After the game I told [Coach Rudi] Garcia that there was no point in talking about the team's performance after a mistake like that.

“I hate admitting it but things like that happen. I just focused on work and on the next game.

“The injury is over and I'm back to training. I hope we can go back to winning in the Champions League.

“Roma play a very offensive game and sometimes we leave too many open spaces in defence. The full-backs like to attack and help the wingers and sometimes that leaves the defence open.

“It's a risk we have to run if we want to play like this. It's better to win 5-2 than 1-0.

“We can still improve. We're capable of attacking very well and we can pick up results even though we allow some goals. If our defence improves we can become really strong.”
