“Fiorentina represented a fundamental stage in my professional growth and I want to thank the Della Valle family for the opportunity given and the three years together.

“Now is not the time to discuss misunderstandings that can never cancel the splendid memories I hold in my heart of these three years.”

The former Italian international was immediately earmarked as the man for the Marassi bench when Walter Zenga was sacked on Tuesday.

However, the tactician was still under contract with Fiorentina, having been sacked in the summer, and the Viola were reluctant to release him without hefty compensation.

Negotiations went on for days, with Samp denying on Friday that any deal had been reached.

Montella had two spells at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris as a player, making 96 Serie A appearances and scoring 58 goals.
